Standard Gap Analysis (SGA)
IPC’s product offering of SGA – Standard Gap Analysis is part of the validation services that
IPC offers to its clients. SGA is an offer for the customer to pre-determine
his preparedness to go for a full-fledged audit or not. An audit when ordered results in a pass or
fail situation. If the audit fails, not only the whole of the exercise becomes
a waste of money and other resources, it projects the company in a very poor light.
To avoid this situation, a client can order an
SGA, where IPC qualified auditors will do the audit as per IPC standards (only
with respect to IPC standards and no other standards, please). The report of thus
conducted SGA will bring out variations (deviations) from the IPC standards.
The auditors will also give their recommendations for the improvements/ changes
to plug the gaps and make the process IPC standards compliant.
Post this SGA and recommendations, the client is
having the option of adopting the suggested changes and the client may like to
use this to further:
- Order an
audit for certification, if it is required by any of his clients, or
- Order a follow up audit to ensure the gaps are plugged, or
- Just be happy to have carried out the recommendations for quality improvement to avoid costly rejections and rework.
The Standard Gap Analysis is carried out as per
IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronics
Assemblies and the IPC J-STD-001
Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies. Additional IPC
standards may be used as reference depending upon the customized requirement of
the customer.
The certified auditors for these SGAs are always qualified and
certified CITs (Certified IPC Trainers) or MITs (Master IPC Trainers) in the above-mentioned
standards with enough experience to have faced and resolved problems which
arise in the Electronic Hardware Manufacturing.
